Swami Dhirendra Brahmachari Ji
Yoga Guru of prime ministers of India
Swami Dhirendra Brahmachari Ji was the best Royal Himalayan Yoga Guru of 20th century. That's why the prime ministers of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru & Indira Gandhi selected him to be their family Guru. After certifying his superiority, he was also made incharge to promote yoga in the Nation. He was also the bridge between Himalayan Yogis (yogis living isolated spiritual life in extreme weather conditions in Himalayan Mountains) and Indian Royalties as well as yogis living in societies in India. That's why, International Yoga Research Centre was established under his guidance in Indian capital as an autonomous body under Ministry of Health.
Link between Himalayan yogis and social yogis
He was passing the secret teachings of Himalayan yogis to the yogis living in society. Because of these secret & sacred teachings, his highness was highly regarded and approached by most reputed yogis of the era for learning and clarification of doubts, which include Sri Mahesh yogi, Yogi Bajan Singh, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Sant Sri Asharam Ji Bapu, Yogrishi Baba Ramdev and his favorite disciple and yoga guru of diplomats Sri Balmukund Singh Ji.
He was man of principals with illuminated face, broad shoulders, tall body and the owner of attractive personality. He was known among scientists (metaphysicians, parapsychologists, scientist-astronauts) to be very well equipped with Parapsychological and Metaphysical skills which include mind reading, Reiki, Telepathy and Pranic healing etc. It is believed that he also taught some of very special skills to some of Russian Astronauts during his teaching of usual yoga practices in 1960s
Among medical practitioners
Among medical practitioners (including Allopathic, Ayurvedic, Homeopathic, Unani, Siddha etc.) he was known for knowledge and skills of paranormal abilities of human body and its responses to herbs, food, climate, activities, time and physical movements & postures. He was also very passionate person about new discoveries in area related to health & fitness. He maintained continuous flow of research based scientific studies about human health & mind (we don't call all of them as research because "documenting and keeping records were never his objective" and he was never "letting the quality of research to be compromised for sake of documenting") at established by him International Centre for Yoga Research in Delhi (later changed to 'Central Research Institute for Yoga' and again changed to 'MDNIY'). He was inviting yoga experts (specialized in particular skills) for these purposes from all parts of India to perform, teach and educate about their skills in presence of qualified medical doctors.
Among industrialists he was known as owner of multi millions without having any well-known industry or company (except yoga institutes, where teachings of yoga were offered for free). Property own by him was including his personal Aircraft, most costly imported cars and huge land used for running yoga institutes (Vishwayatan Yogashrams) in Katra (J & K), Mantalai (J & K) and Delhi and bungalows in most posh areas of Delhi and Jammu & Kashmir.
In Indian society, where yoga Gurus were given highest regard by public since ancient time, he was considered very highly influential support to the government because of his popularity in northern states of India (Hindi speaking states, where his television program of yoga was broadcasted).
Many politicians from opposition party considered that, it is "because of Swami Dherandra Brhamchari Ji's support and guidance, the chair of prime minister of India became like a family chair of Jawaharlal Nehru". And in world's largest democracy, Pandit Jawharlal Nehru's family (Jawharlal Nehru, his daughter Indira Gandhi and his grand son Rajiv Gandhi) managed to hold the position of Indian Prime Minister for about 20 years (from 15 August 1947 to 2 October 1989 except some small breaks).
Childhood & Change of Name
Swami Dhirendra Brahmachari Ji was born on 12 February 1924 in 'brahmin family' (Hindu race, considered responsible for spiritual teachings) in a small village Basaitha Chanpura of Madhubani district in Bihar, India.
Following Indian system of Astronomy (ज्योतिश) his parents recognised his yogic qualities and 'sanskaras' (संस्कार) and give him name 'Dhirendra Swarup' (धीरेंद्र स्वरूप).
Along with his surname his complete name became 'Dhirendra Svaroop Choudhari' (धीरेंद्र स्वरूप चौधरी).
He left his home at age of 13 years old in search of Supreme Self. He started very hard penance below a banyan tree at pond about 5k.m. from his village (currently Bankata), while living without a roof, shelter, security and without taking any support from his family (except time to time accepting some food from his mother to console her). As part of tradition of leaving his family support and identity, the surname 'Choudhari' was drooped from his name. And as he was following yogic path of Brahmchariya (ब्रह्मचर्य) or Celibacy, he was called 'Brahmachari' (ब्रह्मचारी). Hence the name 'Dhirendra Svaroop Brahmachari' (धीरेंद्र स्वरूप ब्रह्मचारी) and in short 'Dhirendra Brahmachari' (धीरेंद्र ब्रह्मचारी) appeared.
Himalayan Sadhana and getting title 'Swami'
After more than a year of very hard penance (all the time standing on one leg and doing mantra sadhana), he left the village and moved to Himalayan mountains. He spent most of his 'learning' & 'teenage' life in Himalayas in the mystic way under guidance of various gurus. Not much is known about his 'learning' & 'teenage' life. Public is only aware about some episodes of this period, when he was living in two branches of Vishwayatan Yog Ashram (at Ayodhaya & at Gopal-Khera) as disciple of one of the greatest yogis of 20th century 'Maharishi Kartikaya Ji' (it is believed 'Maharishi Kartikaya Ji' lived over 300 years).
However it is known that he considered Kailash, Manasarovar, Dronadrn, Gapdhamadan and Sumeru as most important among Himalayan Mountains for yoga practitioners. And his few of the most profound experiences were to see and learn 'very simple to perform but powerful' practices of yoga. These practices were used by Himalayan yogis, who stay in a state of 'Samadhi' (समाधि) for few months and more.
Samadhi (समाधि) is altered state of consciousness in which practitioner's physical body may reach stage of 'clinical death' and can return to its normal stage with voluntary control.
After coming out of the state of 'Samadhi', Himalayan yogis were using these practices to remove the degenerating effects of time from their physical body, to heal, rejuvenate and to get recharged before entering the state of Samadhi again.
'Swami' (स्वामी) literally means 'owner'. In yoga 'Swami' (स्वामी) indicates the person 'who have overcome mind & desires and became owner of Self', 'who have complete control over his/her sensory receptions and keep them away from materialistic pleasures and receives superior joy by keeping attention in 'consciousness' or 'Being' or 'Self'.
Hence during & onwards his yoga sadhana in Himalayan Mountains, he was called 'Swami Dhirendra Svaroop Brahmachari' (स्वामी धीरेंद्र स्वरूप ब्रह्मचारी). And in short, more typically in verbal communication it became 'Swami Dhirendra Brahmachari' (स्वामी धीरेंद्र ब्रह्मचारी). And in very short he was called 'Swami Ji' (स्वामी जी) or 'Brahmachari Ji' (ब्रह्मचारी जी).
'Ji' (जी) is suffix in Hindi language. It may be used after name or surname of any person to express 'respect' (same like 'sir' and 'madam' in English).
Meeting Indian Prime Ministers Pandit Jawharlal Nehru
Pandit Jawharlal Nehru (prime minister of India at that time) got impressed "when he saw Swami Dhirendra frist time from helicopter as young yogi walking bare chest and bare feet in snow in Himalayan Mountains near Kashmir". Pandit Jawharlal Nehru ordered his helicopter to land and after short communication with Swami Ji, he invited Swami Ji to Parliament house.
Becoming Yoga Mentor/Guru of Prime Ministers of India
Few years later Swami Dherandra Brhamchari Ji visited parliament house. After testifying his skills and mastery of yoga in presence of doctors and respective authorities, Pandit Jawharlal Nehru requested him to become his family Guru. Swami Dherandra Brhamchari Ji refused initially to live in metro city (Delhi), because it may spoil his yoga sadhana and may lead to spiritual downfall. But when Indian prime minister Jawharlal Nehru offered him to promote the 'rare science of yoga' among public under government support, Swami Dhirendra Brhamchari Ji excepted his proposal and started to teach yoga to his family.
Establishing International Yoga Research Centre & Hospital
With support of prime minister, he established international yoga research centre, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, government of India at 68 Ashoka road, New Delhi 110001. He also started a yoga hospital in same campus to support researches and development in yoga with capacity of 50 beds for indoor patients. In this hospital, patients were offered free stay, food and treatments to heal wide range of disorders without using any medicines, under supervision of medically qualified doctors (although Allopathic medicines were available for emergency situations, but they were almost never required).
Introducing yoga in schools
Under his guidance government introduced yoga as compulsory part of school curriculum in Delhi Government school and 'Kendriya Vidyalaya' (Kendriya Vidyalaya are governed by centre government and it is also the largest chain of schools in India). He also established yoga teacher training institutes in Delhi, Jammu, Katra and Mantalai and named them after his Guru Ji's tradition 'Vishwayatan Yoga Ashram' (विश्वायतन योग आश्रम) to fulfill the demand of big number of qualified yoga teachers to teach yoga in schools as per newly introduced curriculum in schools of Delhi Government and Central Schools (Kendriya Vidyalaya).
His T.V. program influenced Indian politics
To promote yoga among people living in remote areas, he also started to telecast yoga program (in northern India) on government owned, national television channel 'Doordarshan'. Huge popularity of his yoga program on television and 'regard by public' made him very influential personality in Indian politics.
Authored Yoga Books
Two books written by him (published in English & Hindi) became authority on yogic science. First book 'Sukshama Vyayam Vigyan - Yoga Science Series - 1' (योगिक सूक्ष्म व्यायाम विज्ञान) was published in year 1956 and second 'Yoga Asana Vigyan - Yoga Science Series - 2' (योग आसन विज्ञान) was published in 1970. Originally both books were written in Hindi and later were translated in English.
Now these books are also available in some foreign languages (including Russian and German) translated & published by some of his followers. In some countries (not in India) few additional books are also claimed (by publishers) 'to be written by Swami Dherandra Brhamchari Ji'. But authenticity of the additional books is questioned as these were never published in India in any language. Also the language, expressions and style of additional books differ from original two books written by Swami Dherandra Brhamchari Ji. Although one manuscript of complete work and one of partial work are missing since Swami Ji left his mortal body.
Training Russian cosmonauts
In 1960s he started to visit USSR to train Russian cosmonauts. In 1980's Swami Ji introduced favorite disciple Sri Balmukund Singh Ji to Russian cosmonauts as yoga expert.
International Yoga Seminar
To accelerate research work in yoga, apart from very frequently organized domestic seminars of yoga, he also organized first international yoga seminar in Delhi which was chaired by Sri Chander Mohan Ji Maharaj and guests of honor were Indira Gandhi and Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru. It was very appreciated by internationally renowned & eminent people related to yoga, especially from United Kingdom and Russia.
Because of his popularity, political influential power and support to Indira Gandhi, political parties brought him in controversial theories.
Leaving The Mortal Body
As per official records he died in his private airplane crash on 9 June 1994. In a bad weather condition, he takes off his private plane from Delhi Safderjung Airport for J&K after 'refusal by pilot' (it was his routine practice to fly aircraft by his own). This created controversy weather he died or 'pretended his death' and went to Himalayas for his further practice.
Immaculate Teachings of Yoga
Yoga teachings by him were always ingenious and non-controversial even for political rivals. The effectiveness, authenticity and reliability of yoga techniques taught by him, proved him the superb yoga teacher approachable by ordinary human beings such as politicians. That is why, he remained family Yoga Guru of prime ministers of India. Humanity will remain grateful to him forever for his contribution in providing details and techniques of Asanas (आसन), Yogic Suksha Vyyam (योगिक सूक्ष्म व्यायाम विज्ञान), Yogic Sthul Vyayam (योगिक सूक्ष्म व्यायाम विज्ञान), Shat Kriyas (ष्टकर्म), Mudras (मुद्रा), Pranayama (प्राणायाम) and Meditation (ध्यान ).
